Hi! I'm Rachel, a copywriter, copyeditor and expert storyteller newly transplanted from New York City to St. Louis.

For over 7 years, I have been leading/assisting brands in the creation of a truly outstanding and memorable presence online and in print. Even in my single digits I was visualizing storylines and putting pen to paper— my inherent passion and affinity for words/language characterizing my entire academic career. I’ve used each position and contract since then to hone in that skillset, and now I am a jack-of-all-trades for all content and branding needs.

When content & copy are curated the right and work together, they have the most profound impact on the user experience. I have worked closely with graphic designers, writers, and creative directors to produce expertly-crafted content and imagery for video, print, websites and digital media. My goal is to deliver the kind of inspiring brand strategy that makes companies re-imagine and expand their own perception of their products/services.

Introducing the XBell System: the Shortcut to Heavy Weights at Home

Just as we predicted, the FitRX adjustable dumbbells have revolutionized at-home workouts. We said goodbye to heavy and expensive dumbbell racks, and created a way for the whole family to get a tailored, total-body, free-weight workout with only one piece of reliable equipment.

And now, we are thrilled to introduce the next phase of FitRX’s game-changing fitness gear, the XBell System. Maximize your dumbbell performance by turning any set of dumbells into a barbell, macebell or kettlebell for heavily-weighted, muscle-building workouts to shape your body and boost metabolic functioning.

Our goal is to make strong bodies accessible to everyone – regardless of income, busy schedules, or discomfort with the big box gym atmosphere. So after the strides we made with dumbbells, transforming the barbell and kettlebell just made sense.

Each XBell System comes with a 36’’ straight bar and kettlebell handle attachment. Screw down locks clamp around the dumbbell handle and hold up to 200lbs. Simply secure a dumbbell of your choice and open the door to dozens of complex weight training exercises— from bench presses to back squats.

You’ve probably heard the quote that “life begins at the end of your comfort zone” - but when it comes to building strong, healthy bodies, we tend to disagree. Life requires comfortability of movement, strength, and ease of function. And with the right equipment, life can begin right in the comfort of your living room. The XBell System is here to prove it.

Happy lifting.

Our Story

Four Lunas Toffee

Being a mother of three girls, all with different interests and talents, I have always reveled in watching my daughters grow into their unique identities. But I also knew that as they got older, they would only continue to carve out their beautiful and individual paths in the world, and I wanted us all to have a solid common ground upon which we could always come back to each other. Toffee became that common ground.

Maybe it’s the clean ingredients. Maybe it’s the simplicity of the recipes. Maybe it's my one-of-a-kind daughters and their one-of-a-kind additions to every batch. Or maybe it’s all the love I feel for my family’s common denominator. But one thing is for sure— somewhere along the way, my daughters and I cooked up some magic in these toffee pans. And I’m so thankful we can share that magic with the world.

Four Lunas isn’t just the best darn toffee this side of the pond— it’s 15 years spent in kitchen with my daughters; laughing, sharing stories, and perfecting our toffee recipes for generations to come.

Racial Profiling Has Too High A Cost

Essay written for SNYPUR - company offering tutoring services and essay-writing

Racial division has been gaining renewed momentum in headlines across the globe, with law enforcement as the catalyst. Social media is largely to thank for the national recognition of race issues; the online foundation of the Black Lives Matter Movement alone has prompted the development of chapters in thirty one US cities, as well as local and international protests and rallies (De Choudhury, Jhaver, Sugar & Weber, 2016). There is loud opposition to the use of racial profiling by law enforcement, and an overarching disdain for police power and action has slowly infiltrated the social mindset of the world.

This is not just because of the sudden onslaught of instances of racially abusive police officers-- it is also the steadfast shortfall of punishment for the officers involved in these situations. Whether or not a claim of racial profiling is merited, it is the unfortunate truth that there is very little that can be done to prove a police officer’s actions are unconstitutional. But despite the difficulty the public may face in pursuing justice for any perceived racial abuse, it is still not at all in the best interest of any police department to purposefully use racial profiling as a protective measure. Not only is there sufficient evidence to prove the total ineffectiveness of racial profiling in catching terrorists and other such criminals, the social ramifications of the practice alone are enough to affirm that racial discrimination is actually detrimental to law enforcement initiatives.

There is an extremely fine line between what is considered legitimate use of racial profiling by the police, and actions that are unlawful. In his paper, “The Role of Race in Law Enforcement: Racial Profiling or Legitimate Use,” Richard Schott explains that US courts recognize the legitimacy of distinctions based on race “during times of national crisis, such as war,” when “preventing espionage and sabotage” is at the forefront of law enforcement priorities (Schott 25). Schott puts forth the example of Korematsu vs. United States, a challenge by a Japanese American against his conviction of violating the exclusion order issued during World War II. The order made certain military areas of the West Coast impassible to persons of Japanese descent. Korematsu’s challenge was denied by the Supreme Court, as the exclusion order was deemed entirely necessary for the protection of the United States against espionage at the time it was issued. In modern examples, narcotics investigators find use for racial categorizations when profiling drug smugglers— of course, these categorizations are based on long-winded research and review of shared characteristics among perpetrators, race only being one of them (Schott 25). It is held by the courts that these “profiles, combined with other facts and circumstances, can establish reasonable suspicion or probable cause” (25).

While these instances of racial profiling seem research-backed and logical, statistical analysis says otherwise. William Press explores the use of ethnic profiling in his essay, “To Catch a Terrorist: Can Ethnic Profiling Work?” He explains that by “concentrating law enforcement resources on a profiled group, one is implicitly diluting those resources on the complement group, the rest of the population” (Press, 165-166). In other words, when using racial profiling to extract likely candidates for terrorism from an airport population, the group outside the focus of law enforcement appears to be completely without criminal behavior. Thus, law enforcement is blinded to a large section of the population-- a section Press goes on to analyze as equally likely to house prospective terrorist threats from individuals “whose profile values happe[n] to not be so high” (167).

Further examples put forth in which Press uses algorithms to test various forms of racial sampling in weeding out potential terrorists from the same airport population prove more impotence. The race-motivated variables yield worse results than those resulted from uniform, unbiased sampling. That’s because the probabilities surrounding criminal profiles are very rarely perfect-- they are controlled by human choice, the officer deciding the characteristics that give a suspect a higher or lower probability of being a threat. He concludes that in opposition to ethnic profiling,  “uniform sampling, without the use of profiling, is surprisingly good,” (167) and even goes on to say that the choice between profiling and uniform sampling “should not be viewed as difficult” (167).

Perhaps an even more pressing issue addressed by Press in his findings is the morality factor behind the practice of ethnic profiling. The lack of citable advantage when using profiling in discovering terrorist threats, coupled with the “huge moral toll [profiling extracts] from a democratic society,” (167) leaves the public with many questions and criticisms. Allegations of racial intolerance and actions are founded on the Fourth Amendment, and the reasonable requirements it delineates for searches and seizures by law enforcement (Schott 26). Unfortunately for the public and fortunately for law enforcement, allegations of Fourth Amendment violation are made exceedingly difficult to substantiate by governmental regimens in place to protect law enforcement (whether their actions are constitutional or not). While the litigable allegations racial profiling can bring down among officers may not be many, the issue lies more in the devastating public opinion they are warranting. It is the same public opinion that is so rampant on social media today-- that police will rarely, if ever, be punished for racially-motivated actions.

Without threat of further reprimanding than a slap on the wrist, what is stopping racist police officers from doing whatever they want? When racial profiling is bolstered by the aforementioned “other facts and circumstances” required for constitutionality, those facts and circumstances are ever more easily objectionable. Evidence that is serving the purpose of upholding racial categorization is immediately suspect. Moreover, with algorithmic proof that ethnic profiling is actually less effective in catching terrorists than objective populace searches, it seems short-sighted and frivolous of law enforcement to merit the maelstrom of criticism and revolt that racial profiling clearly propels. William Press’s concluding lesson is in favor of uniform sampling, particularly because “[i]t is robust against false assumptions... it easy to implement… and it is devoid of moral and political hazard” (167). Especially in the current social atmosphere in the United States and abroad, law enforcement will be lending infinite investigations to social discontent when putting a racially-founded foot forward.

Public outcry can lead to limited abilities by law enforcement officers to carry out protective protocols when necessary. In his paper, “Race Issues and Stop and Search: Looking Behind the Statistics,” Kiron Reid addresses the confidence lacked by police officers when carrying out anti-terrorist policies in Britain following the attacks of July 2005, when the socio-political climate made them “too afraid...for fear of being accused of racism” (Reid 169). This mindset is something that will only spread as the spite for unlawful police profiling increases. It comes down to a question legacy; does law enforcement want to be condemned and scrutinized for a practice that has no palpable safety benefits, or do they want to regain the moral and constitutional highground, and the respect of the public?

5 Ways to Wear Your Navy Suit

https://blacklapel.com/thecompass/5-navy-suit-combinations-for-work-week/

A perfectly-fitted navy blue suit is a closet staple— a sleek and subtle bit of color that’s still conveniently pairable with your go-to shirt and tie combination. But with the ease of the ever-present black suit option winking at you from your closet every morning, it’s tempting to overlook all the potential of your navy suit and settle for its more basic counterpart. Soon enough, that dapper blue number is idling away on its hanger, inching back into the archives, coming to rest somewhere between the neon cutoff t-shirts you bought at Coachella two years ago and the ghosts of groomsmen past section.

But no one puts navy in a corner! Navy gets up on that stage with Patrick Swazy and NAILS that lift like the superstar that it is!

That metaphor might not make much sense but the fact remains, it’s time to realize the full potential of your navy blue suit combinations. A bi-monthly cameo in your weekly suit rotation with that same dress shirt and tie might be convincing you that your navy suit is one-dimensional, but we beg to differ. The right array of accent colors and accessories can make an impactful difference on the vibe of your navy suit.

So here’s to the week of navy: five different navy suits, five days in a row.

#1. Monday: The Essential Standard

We’ll start the week off with one of the most timeless navy blue suit combinations, made famous by many a silver-screen stallion: a crisp white shirt, burgundy tie, and a sleek white pocket square. For the hustling executive, nothing can compare to the versatility and ease of these classic complementary colors. Add a polished pair of the Mercer Brown Shoes for a well-grounded, formal spin on the fit.

#2. Tuesday: The Smooth Operator

This is the navy blue suit combination for the man who always comes prepared— for the office, happy hour drinks, and wherever the night takes him after that. We start with our navy suit, and add shadowy accent layers with our Light Blue Dress Shirt, Royal Purple Tie, and Gray Heather - Navy Pocket Square. The twilight hues created with these darker colors are both understated and macho, and will carry you seamlessly into the after hours. Finish it off with our Black Mercer Shoes and a James Bond-esque poker face.

#3. Wednesday: The Statement-Maker

You’re halfway through your week, so what better way to celebrate than this week’s most colorful blue suit combination? Couple our Pink Micro Check Shirt and Blue Check Tie with the Hudson Light Brown Shoes, and brighten up your navy with a blend of playful colors. Seal it up with the Teal Flowers Pocket Square and a spring in your step, because this look will have you feeling some serious mid-week style vibes.

#4. Thursday: The Modern Classic

Think of Thursday as Monday’s fraternal twin brother: a love of the classic runs in the family, but where his brother spends his days in the boardroom, Thursday rides through his fledgling startup on a segway and hosts think sessions around a ping-pong table. So today we pay homage to the classic blue suit combinations by layering similar colors, but in patterns; the Blue Pencil Stripe Shirt, Burgundy Check Tie, and the Egg Whites pocket square in burgundy. The contrasting stripe and check patterns enliven the classic color dynamic, and the extra emphasis on detail won’t go unnoticed. Tie it all in with the Mercer Brown Shoes. Chef’s kiss.

#5. The (Not-So) Casual Friday

While it’s all too important to dress for the job you want, it’s Friday, and your boss is cool, so let’s close out the week of navy with a short walk off the beaten suit path. Wearing your navy suit as separates is a great way to mix up your style, especially as you head into a sunny summer weekend. So lose the tie, keep the navy blazer, don a pair of our Dusty Tan Fresco Pants, and fire up the grill— your friday suit has arrived. The Blue Mini Check Twill Weave Shirt and Maroon Wool Pocket Square add the preppiness to make this look office-suitable— pun intended. Round it all off with that same versatile pair of Mercer Brown Shoes and you’ll be stepping into your weekend in no time flat.

Congrats!

Well, you got through another week, and we have to admit— you looked good doing it. While these five ways to wear a navy suit are our favorites, there are tons of other navy blue suit combinations out there. So now that we’ve gotten the wheels turning, see what other mixing and matching you can come up with on your own! If you create some killer combos, make sure to leave your styling tips in the comments below :).
